About John Bullock...

I can now say, with a deep breath, that I’ve been in the lighting industry for over thirty years. In that time, I’ve experienced most sectors of the business; as a contractor, a manufacturer, a supplier and ultimately, as an independent design consultant.

I’ve been an independent design consultant in 1984, forming Equation Lighting Design in 1986 and heading that studio as Design Director until 1997. Then I got out of London, did the downshifting bit, and moved on to work as a freelance designer.

More recently I’ve become an educator as well as a practicing design consultant, offering courses in lighting design to interior designers and architects.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have my work recognised by the judges of the Lighting Design Awards:
2005: ‘Highly Commended’ for The Spa at Pennyhill Park Hotel.
2006: ‘Highly Commended’ for The Voysey House, Studland.
2006: ‘Commended’ for Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, Dublin.
In 2007 I was a member of the judging panel.

I am a Member of The Society of Light and Lighting (CIBSE).

Recent work has been notable for its diversity:

Private House, Studland

This major refurbishment of a 1970’s house provided the opportunity to explore low energy lighting as a major feature of the lighting design. Working together with specialist lighting manufacturers, glass workers and a glass artist (Aline Johnson – see links) the result is both stunning and subtle in turn.

The Wooden Bridge, and the York Road Underpass, Guildford

The Wooden Bridge may not be made of wood, but it is in Guildford and can be seen to greatest effect by motorists travelling on the A3 towards London. The concrete pedestrian bridge is not attractive in itself, but the lighting treatment has transformed a very dull daytime piece of urban construction into a welcoming light feature at night.

The York Road pedestrian underpass is another example of concrete brutalism. The new lighting pillars at each end of the underpass register when there is someone in the vicinity, helping residents to identify when others may be lurking unseen at the entrance into the underpass. We hope that the new light show turns the York Road underpass into a meeting place for local people, rather than somewhere to avoid.

The XScape centres are developing a reputation for their quirky interiors and the client constantly requires its project teams to develop new and exciting designs to keep the visitor experience fresh. Braehead is the latest XScape centre.
