This gallery was refurbished over 20 years ago and its good to see that the original lighting is still in place. Its an early combination of low energy lighting and more traditional display lighting techniques. The gallery itself relies on a low level of ambient illumination, so that its possible to control lighting levels on sensitive objects. The display cases use mainly low energy fluorescent sources, supported with occasional tungsten halogen spotlighting, though always low wattage lamps are used. The low ambient lighting level was achieved by mechanically shuttering the original rooflights of the gallery.
