The original GWR works at Swindon now contains the STEAM! museum. It was a requirement of the refurbishment that the rooflights, which originally lit the work going on below, should be retained. This was a problem for the exhibition designers, as natural light is not something that’s altogether welcome in a display environment. This was overcome by using a special glazing system that removes 99% of visible light, reducing harmful UV light at the same time. In this way, it was possible to satisfy the heritage brief and create an interior where exhibits could be seen at their very best.
