Gis a Job!

There are days – most days, come to think about it – when I suspect our government of wilfully misunderstanding what it means to be in business. The unforeseen price of a gastric bug is that I’ve sat through interviews over the past few days with politicians of all stripes calling for VAT holidays, corporation tax fixes and all manner of flummery to ‘help’ the business sector avoid more redundancies. Let me help these guys out here; the thing that keeps people in their jobs is WORK.

Designers need to design; engineers need to engineer; builders need to build. And once the government has hocked all our futures in their attempt to grass over the slurry pit that the banks have made of their own business, we’ll still be sitting here with our usual quizzical look of: ‘Anyone fancy a bit of design, then?’

It’s not as if there’s nothing to do. Even in this windswept area of the land where few people live but many venture, there are public projects that could do with some funding. Dorchester’s County Museum could be with a major overhaul, the ‘Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site’ is meant to pull in visitors from – ooh – everywhere, but there’s not much to show apart from the gloriously crumbling cliffs themselves – and step away from the overhang, if you please. And that’s before we start talking about a very necessary programme of new social housing. Maybe we could call them council houses. That would be a happy trip down memory lane.

If private sector funders are hiding under their duvets, scared that The Madoff might get them – beware The Madoff, my son. The hedges that bite, the funds that catch -
who else can get the construction industry off and running again apart from this government - once they’ve lifted their heads out of that massive pit of ordure called UK banking.
